Once upon a time... A long, long, long, long, long, long, long time ago... There was a young monster called.... Jaxon.
Now, one day, Jaxon and his monster mommy had to go on a shopping trip to buy some new clothes. On the way, they stopped to pick up monster nanny too because she really wanted to buy a new hat.
They got to the shopping centre, got out of the car, crossed the car park and went into the lift because monster nanny had poorly knees and couldn't walk up the steps.
The doors of the lift opened into a huge shopping centre with so many shops that they couldn't decide which shop to go into first. Monster nanny wanted the hat shop, monster mommy wanted the dress shop and little monster Jaxon wanted the toy shop... And a milkshake... And some chicken nuggets and chips... And a new ball... And some new pyjamas... And a dog... And some biscuits.
So monster mommy decided that because she had driven there that she was going to her shop first. They were in there for ages! Monster mommy must have tried on about 20 dresses before she decided that she didn't like any of them. Jaxon was so bored, he started to wonder off around the shop but just as he was about to turn a corner, monster nanny grabbed him by the arm and told him off. 'Don't you dare wonder off,' she said, 'or we won't be going to any toy shop... Or nugget shop.. Or milkshake shop.. Or ball shop.. Or pyjama shop.. Or dog shop.. Or biscuit shop!'
Jaxon had a little giggle and sat down on one of the empty waiting chairs in the shop. 5 minutes later, monster mommy came back.' There are just no dresses here! 'she said.' Of course there are!' cried Jaxon but his monster nanny gave him such a stern look that he shut up straight away with his head down.
Dress shop after dress shop, they went around the entire shopping centre looking for that perfect dress. Even monster nanny was getting bored! Finally they walked into the last dress shop they could find. Jaxon and monster nanny went straight to the waiting chairs and sat down. Dress after dress, monster mommy must have been trying on the whole shop! Then Jaxon had an idea. He waited until monster nanny was dropping to sleep and he slipped off his chair. He looked over his shoulder as he wondered off into the shop. Now Jaxon wasn't a silly monster and knew that monster mommy and monster nanny were going to be looking for him so he found a nice gap in a clothes rail and walked through.
This particular clothes rail was the sort that went in a big circle so he could look out from between the clothes and see the entire shop.
Just then he heard an almighty scream! 'HELP!!' yelled monster mommy, 'my son is... MISSING!'
Jaxon stayed completely still and had a little giggle to himself. 'I'll teach them for making me bored' he thought.
They searched everywhere. They looked in every changing room, they searched around every rail, they even searched behind the counter but they couldn't find Jaxon.
Monster mommy then turned to monster nanny and started yelling at her. 'It's all your fault!' she cried. She was so angry. 'You were supposed to be watching him but all you did was fall asleep. What sort of monster nanny are you?'
Monster nanny started to cry. 'I'm sorry' she cried, 'there were so many dresses and so many shops and you were taking soooooo long I couldn't help but doze off. It was only for a second...'. She was crying so much that Jaxon started to feel really bad. It wasn't monster nanny's fault that he had wondered off. He thought it would be funny. He thought it was going to be a bit of fun.. Like a game of hide and seek. He didn't want monster nanny to cry.
Jaxon poked his head out from behind the clothes. 'There he is!' shouted the shopkeeper and they all came running over to Jaxon. 'Where have you been? What have you been doing? Did you think this was funny? I was so, We were so worried, we thought someone had taken you and we'd never see you again!' she was crying so hard and hugging so tight that Jaxon thought he wasn't going to get told off.... But then... Monster nanny. 'You naughty, naughty little monster. There will be NO toy shop, NO nugget shop, NO milkshake shop, NO ball shop, NO pyjama shop, NO dog shop and definitely NO biscuit shop!'
Jaxon started to cry. 'I'm so sorry' he cried, 'I was only playing.'
'Playing?!' screamed monster nanny, 'you'd better get straight back to that car now and straight to bed when you get home.'
Jaxon did exactly as he was told. They went back to the car, dropped monster nanny home and when they got back, Jaxon gave mommy monster one last big hug and a kiss. 'Sorry mommy' he cried and went straight up to bed.
Just before he went to sleep, he thought about the day and imagined how he might feel if he lost someone who was really special to him and knew it would make him really sad so he made a promise to never wonder off again....
The end.
Read this aloud to myself and found myself chuckling.
